Hollyhocks

Out and about along the byways of London, I have sometimes noticed Hollyhocks growing along the waysides. Growing tall and swaying in the breeze, they somehow stay upright and display their flowers all the way up their stems, each one so delicate and perfectly formed.

And when the blooms fade, little pods of seeds appear. Like so many gardeners, I was never able to get them to grow in my garden.

But now I have discovered their secret: they like to grow close to hard surfaces - like paths. And another of their secrets: each Hollyhock yields hundreds of seeds.

It takes patience. They take two years to grow - the first year leaves appear and stay close to the ground, as if they are snuggling down and hiding their roots under a nearby path.

Then, the second year, they grow up - and the flowers open.

And what joy they have brought. Not just to us, but the bees as well.
